Snow Day and School Closure FAQ

snow day

How will we be informed if the school is not open due to bad weather?

An announcement will be made on High Peak Radio as soon as a decision has been made. A text will also be sent to all parents. It is therefore very important that the telephone number recorded on our system is up to date. Every effort will be made to post information on the website, access permitting. If there are no messages from High Peak Radio, no texts and no website message, the school will be open.

What time will we be informed of the school closure?

Parents will be informed as soon as practically possible if the school is to be closed. Every effort will be made for information to be given prior to pupils (and staff) setting off for school.

How will the decision be made?

The Headteacher will decide how safe it is for pupils and staff to travel into school, how safe it will be for pupils and staff to stay in school and how safe it is for pupils and staff to travel home from school. Every effort will be made to keep the school open. The decision to close the school is not taken lightly.

What about if the weather changes during the day, when the students are already in school?

The Headteacher will decide whether the school should close early if there is a possibility that pupils and staff may find the journey home dangerous or extremely difficult. In the event of a failure of the transport system, it may be necessary to send pupils to an alternative safe destination in Buxton.

Our aim will be to effect an orderly and rapid dismissal, sending pupils home by the safest available route. Pupils will not be allowed to leave school unless we are certain that there is a safe destination for them to go to. We would ask parents to discuss, in advance with their children, what the child is to do under such circumstances and to confirm these arrangements with the other adults involved. Pupils will be expected to contact their parents to confirm their whereabouts and arrange their final journey home as soon as they can. The necessary addresses and telephone numbers should be recorded in the pupil planner.

The school will ensure that pupils sign out, leaving written confirmation of their destination address and phone number as well as their intended method of transport. Parents are asked not to telephone the school unnecessarily to leave the telephone line free for emergency use.

What about work for students during school closure due to the poor weather?

Every effort will be made to post work on the website for pupils to access. Work is currently being done to improve our learning platform. The new learning platform should be up and operational by the end of the Autumn Term 2012.
