During the last week of term, 37 students and 4 staff of St Thomas More Catholic School, Buxton, went on a five day trip to the Flanders region of Belgium organised by the Languages Department. They stayed at the Old Abbey Hotel in Lo-Reninge and from there went on a number of different day trips both within Belgium and to France.
During these visits, students were able to see trenches, cemeteries and memorials from World War I which complemented the topics studied in their history lessons. They visited the “In Flanders Fields” museum in Ypres and Talbot House in Poperinge, a place where British soldiers were welcomed during their time off from the front lines. They also went on a tour of the city of Lille where they could practise their French whilst doing some shopping. Some just-for-fun activities were also on the cards: a day was spent at the Bellewaerde Theme Park where luckily there were hardly any queues and some students had a record number of rides on the Boomerang rollercoaster!
It was a great experience for everybody involved and the young people did their school proud with excellent behaviour, manners and respect for the solemnity of the places they visited.
