Our week at The Briars!

On 5th November a very excited group of Year 9s set off for a fun filled week at The Briars, Crich.  I have to say the luggage was impressive even by my standards! It ranged from tiny backpacks to suitcases that looked like they were packed for a three month holiday touring Europe (most of the girls!).  Nevertheless we all managed to shove our bags into the coach and be on our way.  After a restless journey we pulled into The Briars and all piled off the coach eager to see our rooms.  We organised our roommates (which took considerably longer for the girls to do than the boys!) and raced up the stairs to check them all out.  All the girls seemed quite content with their cosy, little rooms in Robin Hill which were where we were staying, until the boys told us about theirs – they had the rooms with en-suites!  After getting over this fact we went downstairs to the main meeting place to meet the team.  They were all lovely and welcoming and gave us a tour of The Briars with some funny stories about various different rooms on site.  We got put into our small groups and dived into the afternoon activities which included naming our groups and there were definitely some inventive ones!  Before we knew it, it was time for tea and this is where we were introduced to the famous ‘Briars Graces’.  The team had basically picked well known tunes and filled in the lyrics with words of a grace along with finger clicks, hand gestures and clapping!  Later on in the week our challenge was to make up graces of our own which was definitely entertaining to watch!  The food was amazing all round and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

The week seemed to fly by as we took part in some amazing activities such as a climbing wall, team building games, putting on group performances and bowling, which was so much fun.  Also there was a talent show on Thursday night which included some really impressive performances, a hilarious dance from two of the boys, an incredible video and even a song from the teachers!  Also we discovered someone who had been keeping his amazing talent out of the spotlight and persuaded him to be proud of it and show it to the world.  Our week away helped us all to do this and to be confident in ourselves and of who we are.

Lucy B said “It was an amazing week, one of the best of my life so far and it has brought me so much closer with all of my friends and I will treasure the memories forever.”

Almost everyone I asked gave this reaction.

Niamh M has a warning for all the students in lower years – “I know all you guys are excited for this but trust me, you are nowhere near excited enough!”

All I have to say is, I completely agree with her!
