Many congratulations to the Y8 team from St Thomas More High School in Buxton who came third in the UK Kids’ lit quiz final at the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry on Thursday 6th December 2012. As expected it was always going to be a closely fought out competition and hopes were high for the Y8 team who had secured one of the highest scores in the UK heats.
Cockermouth School from Cumbria won overall with 22 points, securing a place in the world final in Durban, S Africa. St Thomas More tied for second place initially with 20 points but in the playoff, Cherwell School from Oxfordshire won the point, so the STM team came third.
The final competition was fast paced and unlike in the regional heats, students had to compete with the other teams to see who could press the buzzer first before being invited to answer questions, which were much longer and covered a wider range of topics than fiction. The students didn’t have time to collaborate or even think about their answers. Nothing was written down; it was a matter of speed and quick thinking.
Mrs Clifford, Head of English said ‘It is the first time we have entered this prestigious international reading competition. To have secured a place in the final was a huge achievement but to walk away with third place in the whole of the UK is very impressive. Our Y8 girls performed brilliantly.’
The team from St Thomas More competed against 16 other schools from all over the UK, all winning teams from the regional heats. For gaining third place the students were each presented with a free book and a £15 book token by the highly acclaimed children’s writer Malorie Blackman.
