Great effort by our - Year 9 Basketball team.
The Year 9 team travelled to Belper School with 2 of the starting 5 players missing. This was not a problem and the players that stepped in made a good impact, which shows the importance of having strength and depth in your team. Mateusz Jezierski had a strong game and the team eventually finished comfortable winners 39 - 29. In the semi-final STM played last years finalists Queen Elizabeths (QEGS Ashbourne) at home. This was a close game with both teams leading at some point. Another strong defensive display helped the team come out on top 39 - 35, with a particularly strong performance from Liam Bradshaw ensuring a County Final against West Park.
The Final took place on Monday 11th March at Anthony Gell School in Wirksworth. West Park started the game strongly and quickly built up a 7 point lead without STM scoring. The first quarter finished with West Park leading 16 – 5. STM created plenty of scoring opportunities but again failed to capitalise on them and by half time trailed 32 – 15. This proved to be the pattern of the game. West Park’s top player scored a total of 40 points during the game and proved to be the difference between the two teams, showing a clinical edge in front of the basket honed through playing National League games with the Derby Trailblazers. After finishing the third quarter trailing 49 – 24, STM then had their best period of the game. Although Ben Dinardo fouled out early on, the team scored 17 points and equalled West Park’s tally in that period for the first time in the game. The final score was—West Park 66 - STM 41 .
Well done to the team and congratulations for reaching the final this year, a reflection of the commitment the players have shown over the last year. The team were; Liam Bradshaw 12pts, Kieran Connell 3pts, Mateusz Jezierski 5pts, Ben Dinardo 10pts, Angus Doig 6pts, Luke Stow 2pts, Tom Wakefield 3pts, Dominic Faugno. Paul Walker was unfortunately off sick.
