STM Hosts the 2015 Junior Literature Challenge for the third year running, eight teams of four pupils participated in what is now becoming an annual event hosted by our English department.......................
St Thomas More Catholic School hosted its own Junior Literature Challenge on July 8th for local primary schools. The event took place in order to help celebrate the school’s ‘Love Reading Week’ and to encourage the 200 primary school students to foster a love of reading.
The winning shield was presented by Head teacher, Mr Brendan Hickey, to the winning team from Buxton Juniors. They won by one and a half points, closely beating a team from St Anne’s School who took second place. Students from Fairfield Juniors and Harpur Hill Primary School also took part in the closely fought competition, which tested the students’ knowledge of children’s fiction, writers and nursery rhymes.
Students at St Thomas More School have an impressive track record with local and international children’s literature competitions. Mrs Clifford, head of English at the school, said ‘this is the third year that we have organised and hosted a literature challenge for local primary schools. Our students are very keen to run their own event to celebrate the enjoyment of reading.’
